Music and Traditions

As I brainstormed about the traditions in my life and the music that goes along with them, I thought about two sweet traditions that I would love to share with all of you. The first important tradition that I cannot wait to plan is my future wedding. From my wedding dress to the music, I have so many ideas that I am so excited for! Am I engaged? no. dating anyone? also no. But my Pinterest has had a wedding board ever since I was 13 years old. Below I have some pictures that showcase the vibe I am going for. Of course, if there is a black and white checkered dance floor, then there has to be fire reception music. Think jazzy, romantic, but also fun and upbeat.

I have a type-A personality, so along with my Pinterest board, I also have a pre-planned, perfectly curated wedding reception playlist made. It may sound silly, but this music means so much to me because, one day, these will be the songs that remind me of my big day. And until that day, they are the soundtrack of my dreams and hopeful expectations. It was hard to pick just one to share, but I find that this song matches the vibe perfectly. Along with other Frank Sinatra, The Ronettes, and ABBA songs, here is one of the songs that I just love from that playlist! This is "Sway" by Michael Bublé.

The next tradition in my life that I want to share is very unique and personal to me. Every time I need to hype myself up for a big event-- whether it is a presentation, a performance, an interview, a first date, or anything that is making me nervous-- I blast this song in my car on the way there. Sometimes I will sing along and dance all my jitters out, and other times I will just sit there, body still as can be, face flushed with anxiety, heart beating out of my chest, as the bass shakes my whole car. It just depends how nervous I am. Regardless of how I act when I play my music before a nerve-wracking event, it is always this song that I put on first. The song is so upbeat, but funny enough, it calms me down now when my nervousness overwhelms me. So if you ever see me driving and hear this song playing, send me a prayer up because I am 100% stressed about something. This is "Friday" ft. Mufasa and Hypeman (Dopamine Re-edit) by Riton x Nightcrawlers.

Thank you for listening and reading about the music and traditions in my life!

  1. Julia! You just motivated me to create a wedding Pinterest board. I already have one for my spam—full of anime panels, LOL—but I’ve been noticing so many people getting engaged or married recently, and D’Asia hopes to be one day soon. Little plug, but I definitely don’t want any little babies there on my big day! On that note, I guess I should start making a playlist too.

"Sway" by Michael BublĂ© had me out of my bed, taking a break from typing and giving my hand a rest. I was rolling my hips, LOL. I just wish my partner, who hates dancing, was with me so we could move together. You wouldn’t be mad if I stole this for my big day—as long as I invite you, right?

The other song you mentioned that helps you regardless of the circumstance—"Friday" ft. Mufasa and Hypeman (Dopamine Re-edit)" by Riton x Nightcrawlers—was so beautiful. My mom would often describe this as something that could be found in a German club mix.

Connecting it to my experience, as mentioned in the prompt, I reflected on how my grandmother listened to gospel and how that kind of music powered her when she took care of me, my siblings, and cousins, growing up in a very structured household. I think one of the biggest similarities between our blogs is the focus on music and ritual, structure, and discipline. The songs you’ve chosen for very specific circumstances—a wedding or to hype yourself up—resonate with that sense of order.

You mentioned being very Type A, and me too! I try to be proactive as much as I can and, honestly, overly organized. When it comes to me and my partner, I typically create the plans, and he just funds or goes along. I think this trait comes from my mom—my grandmother, whom I wrote about, can be a little all over the place sometimes, but above all else, she’s on top of what matters most. Even though I haven’t listened to these songs before, I can see why you chose them and the reasons you describe—they reflect routine, familiarity, and structure, which mirrors my upbringing perfectly.

  3. SAME SAME SAME!! My boyfriend and I have definitely not been together long enough for me to be planning a wedding BUT if we do get married, I already have the songs picked out. It could be considered delulu but I'm just gonna call it "planning ahead". And I loveeeee this song by buble its very nostalgic for me. When it was just my mom and I (before my brothers came along) we would rent movies from Family Video (that is now a vape shop UGHH) and watch movies all night long. This song is in a lot of movies, but my favorite is The Wedding Date. Thanks for helping me reminisce.

  4. Hi Julia! I found your blog to be so interesting. I found it pretty cool that you have envisioned the playlist for your wedding day. I often think about who I will end up marrying but I’ve never thought about the music that will be played at my wedding! I checked out the songs you posted and I enjoyed both of them. I also found it relatable that you have a song to hype you up. I have a few that get me ready to go but having that one main one is something I can definitely relate to. Thank you for sharing so much with us. Hopefully your future husband knows how to dance!
