Music and Me

Hi! My name is Julia Moroz. My experience with learning music started when I was 9 years old at my first piano lesson. I took piano lessons until I was 15, but unfortunately, I do not remember how to read notes (sad, I know). Butttt, I do know how to play and improvise with chords, which is all I really need to play at my church. I also love to sing, and I do all the time, whether it's at church, in the car, in the shower, or literally anywhere else.

Some more fun facts about me: I'm a junior, but I'm graduating this May! I'm majoring in Biology and Psychology. I have lived in Spartanburg my whole life. I currently work as an RBT for kids with autism. I am fluent in Russian. I am a Christian. My favorite food is Chipotle. I'm left-handed. You basically know me now.

1. My current go-to song :) ...and the song that inspired it!

My last name is the Russian word for "frost," and so naturally, my Slavic friends send me any song they hear with that word. This song is one of them. I initially chose to talk about this song because it was the first thing I saw on my "Liked Songs" playlist on Spotify, but I just discovered something way cooler about it. I showed my mom the song and as we listened to it together, she tells me that the song I showed her is actually referencing an old, well-known Russian folk song. She started to sing the folk song and my mind was blown. I linked both songs below!

2. A song that is really important to me

My faith is a HUGE part of who I am. I chose this song specifically because the lyrics wreck me everytime I listen to it. It reminds me that I am not made right with God because of anything I ever did, but because God loved me so much, he chose to take the punishment I deserved. Jesus was beaten, whipped, humiliated, and crucified on a cross just for the chance that I would choose him back. I can't believe anyone could ever love me that much. Because I've made a lottt of mistakes in my life. like a lot. A holy and perfect God would want nothing to do with me... or so I thought. God actually covered all those mistakes with a perfect, atoning sacrifice. His son. in my place. willingly. full of love. Knowing that Jesus loves me that much-- so much that he died for me while I was still hurting him-- how could my response be anything other than adoring him? than loving him back with everything I am? than BEHOLDING him?

3. Something that is not my vibe

When this song first came out, I was not the biggest fan because of the singer's vocal style, but it was tolerable. That was up until it became soooo overplayed. I would hear it on the radio, in stores, on social media, etc. Because of that, this song just annoys me when I hear it. If anyone likes this song, I totally support you in that. I just can't stand hearing it anymore.

  1. Hey Julia! I loved reading your blog—it was so full of personality, and I could really feel how much music means to you. The song that was the most interesting to me was definitely "Dance Monkey." I remember when it first came out and how quickly it was everywhere—the radio, social media, everything! So I totally get what you mean in the fact that it was overplayed. I actually liked it at first, then I heard it for the 50th time in one week on my car radio and I was like nope!

The song that I liked the most, was the one that you shared that reflects your faith, "Behold (This is Jesus)". My faith is also a really strong part of my life, and I connected very deeply with what you wrote in your description. The way you described God's love and sacrifice was very powerful and straight from the heart. Thank you so much for showing your faith and living it out to show how much it means to you! Great blog!

  2. Hi Julia! I really enjoyed your post! I really enjoyed listening to the 2 songs in Russian as I haven't actually heard Russian music. I am a fan of Dance Monkey but only because it holds good memories but I also completely understand why you don't like it!

  3. Hello Julia! I really like listening to the Russian song you included in your post, which is why I found it the most interesting. Although I couldn't understand what they were saying, I still liked the beat that it had. My favorite song that you had was "Behold (This is Jesus)", as I find this song to be quite beautiful and emotional. I also agree with you that Dance Monkey became quite annoying when it started to become very overplayed.

  4. Hey there, Julia. I can't say I'm proficient in any language outside of English, but I find it awesome that you're fluent in Russian. I myself have been trying to learn Japanese, Spanish too, but just for classes admittedly, but I do occasionally find myself dabbling in music from other languages, such as Russian. That being said my favorite has probably got to be the first song you have. My reason for that is the rather dancey feel it gives.
